The world of the supernatural wasn’t new to Jaehyun even before he moved in to Hong Kong from South Korea two years ago. In fact, he knew about him being a son of a Greek deity when he was around 10 years old during his strongest temper tantrum where he accidentally broke every water pipe in their house (her mother went ballistic when the repair bills finally showed up). It was only after that incident that her mother had finally explained everything to him. How he was different from the rest of the kids in their neighborhood. How he was not normal.
That was the first time she had mentioned the name Poseidon. His mother carefully told him their story; how they met, how she fell in love, how she eventually found out that he was a god and how he had to leave them before Jaehyun was born. The whole story may have been very confusing to a child like Jaehyun at that time, but it answered a lot of questions that haunted him his entire life.
Jaehyun finally knew why he only has one parent when his friends always came with a set of two. It answered why he couldn’t see any pictures of his dad in any of their albums and why his mother would always brush off all questions regarding about him, oftentimes she would make up stories that were different from the last. Jaehyun realized that it was quite hard for his single mother to explain to a child that his father was a celestial being without sounding crazy to anyone.
The revelation of his lineage also explained his deep affection towards the sea. As a child he was always seen playing in the sea near their house and had been known to be a great swimmer in their town. His friends would always joke around him, telling him he had gills for lungs since he could stay underwater far way longer than any of them and flippers for a leg since no one could ever beat him when it comes to swimming. It also answered why sea creatures tend to be friendlier around him.
But most importantly, it explained the voice.
Ever since he was small, he would occasionally hear a voice inside his head whenever he comes in contact with sea water. It acted like a guardian, often leading him away from danger. Sometimes it acted like a teacher, educating him about the various aquatic creatures he would encounter. But Jaehyun liked to think of it as a friend that would sometimes indulge him and answer whatever random questions he could come up with. Jaehyun first thought it was normal to have a person talking inside your head while his mother thought her child was just going through a phase of imaginary friends. But after his ability manifested, he eventually knew who the voice was. It was his father, Poseidon himself.
The resentment towards his father for leaving them behind quickly melted away because he realized he never left. He was always there, quietly watching over him from the seas.
From then on, his father’s contact became a little more frequent. It was Poseidon who told him about the other supernatural beings and why they need to live in secrecy. He told him which races were safe to be around and which one he should be careful with.
His father was also the one who helped him on how to control his abilities. It came in whispers of instructions and encouragement from the waters. He told him to treat his ability as a gift and not a burden to carry around with him. The training was a slow process, but eventually Jaehyun managed to gain control of his ability.
However, the contact did not last forever. It was the year 2015. Jaehyun was already nearing the end of his high school when his father’s hold in the human domain slowly dwindled and soon all communication with him stopped. Jaehyun didn’t know the reason of the sudden silence. His father may not answer all of his prayers (he rarely did) but there were times he would show signs he had heard him. In addition, Jaehyun was starting to feel off most of the time. There were days he’d find it a struggle to control his powers. But once he was completely unable to move a single droplet, Jaehyun decided it was time for him to investigate.
Through his limited connections in the supernatural community, he found out the reason of Poseidon’s silence and the gradual lost of his powers. The magic line that was powering his hometown had been completely exhausted. And it wasn’t just an isolated incident. It was happening everywhere.
He relayed this news to his mother. She feared that staying in their hometown would cause some problems on his son. So for the first time in his life, Jaehyun decided to move out of Korea and fly south – to Hong Kong, to one of the last surviving nodes on the planet.
Hong Kong was a new world to Jaehyun. His first year in the city was hard. The environment, language and lack of family and friends were the few hurdles he had to overcome in order to survive in his new home. He enrolled in University of Hong Kong as a Culinary Student while taking Cantonese classes in his spare time. He took up different part-time jobs to support himself as well as help him get accustomed to the city’s culture. Into his second year, he was no longer a stranger to the city. His Cantonese were no longer a jumble of weird words. He no longer gets lost in its crowded streets and confusing subways. Hong Kong might not be like his hometown, but it was slowly starting to feel like home.
Jaehyun’s father is the Greek god Poseidon, the god of the seas, earthquakes and horses. And it’s from him where he inherited his ability to manipulate water. The amount of time he could hold his ability depends upon the mass and volume of water he is manipulating. He could move small volumes of water (maximum of 50 Liters) from one place to another with ease and can hold it for a period of one hour. However, controlling large volumes such as great bodies of water (ponds, lake etc) would easily take a toll on his energy and would end up passing out within 5 minutes.
Unlike his mighty father who can create gigantic tsunamis that could wipe an entire city out of existence, Jaehyun, on the other hand, can only create small waves as high as two meters—a handy ability during those hot dry summers!
Jaehyun can’t create water out of nowhere. He can only control them when they are present around him. So that means he’s completely useless when he’s in a place where water does not exist at all, like in the desert or in any dry places. He can easily control water within his visual range and can also sense and draw out water hidden underground or behind walls as far as 10 meters. The farther the source is the greater the concentration is needed. He also can’t control water in its other forms, like ice and vapour. Water needs to be in its liquid form before he could take control of it.
His ability is susceptible to Electricity Manipulators and can be opposed by Fire Manipulators and Ice Manipulators.
1. Speaks Korean, English and Cantonese.
2. He wears a small vial necklace filled with seawater from his hometown. He wore this one since he was little. It served as a communication medium to Poseidon in the past, but now it seems like the other line is permanently busy.
3. Does not eat seafoods. FISH ARE FRIENDS NOT FOOD! He swore he won't eat one. He thinks he's part fish since his father is Poseidon and think he’ll become a cannibal if he eats one.
4. He cries (only after class and when everyone is gone) whenever he is forced to prepare a seafood dish during their cooking classes.
5. He’s a good swimmer.
6. Water animals are friendly around him. But... he hasn't really tried approaching a shark yet. Maybe he will if he sees one.
7. He gets mad if someone dirties any body of water.
